SCORESBYSUND,
GREENLAND--
Kayak Scoresbysund
and you will enter a
utterly remote arctic
fjord system - a world
of immense scale and
visual grandeur. Far
above the Arctic Circle,
this huge fjord cuts
350 k.m. into the east
coast of Greenland to
the ice cap.
Steep
mountains rise over 2,000
metres from the sea. Gigantic
icebergs overshadow
the surrounding hills.
The sea is home to
narwhals, whales and
seals.
Onshore
we find musk oxen and the
occasional polar bear.
We’ll
camp beside ancient
tent rings and stone
walls - evidence of
pre European contact
Greenlandic Inuit.
Our
adventure starts with a 180 km boat trip from the
airstrip to our first campsite at Hjornedal
- a likely musk oxen site. From here we begin
our 2 week kayak trip paddling north past huge
icebergs
emerging from the Vestfjord. We hope to join
the narwhal as they too journey up the fjords.
We’ll
hike inland discovering musk oxen, arctic hare,
arctic fox and ermine. We may meet local Greenlanders
fishing for arctic char. We’ll cross the
Nord Vest Fjord where vast icebergs set sail
from the inland ice cap finally reaching our
destination
at Sydkap. For this trip you should have some
kayak experience and be prepared for the adventure
of
an expedition in a most remote wilderness.
