POND
INLET - IN SEARCH OF THE NARWHAL--
Pond Inlet is an Inuit hamlet on the north coast
of Baffin Island. In mid August, the ice of Eclipse
Sound breaks up for its brief summer season - and
we go kayaking in search of adventure and the elusive
narwhal. Our Pond Inlet trip starts with a 5 hour
boat trip to Koluctoo Bay where narwhal often congregate
to feed. We will spend a day erecting our folding
kayaks and doing a ‘shake down’ trip
to the Robertson River - a spawning place for Arctic
char. With luck, we’ll have fresh char for
dinner. From Koluctoo Bay, we head north. As we
paddle by fantastic headlands, secluded coves and
barren shorelines, we are constantly watching and
listening for the telltale ‘blow’ of
the narwhal’s breathing. We will come across
stark reminders of the harsh past of the area:
abandonned Inuit camps, rocky graves, stone and
sod house remains. We’ll marvel at the challenges
of their everyday life and be glad of our ‘modern’ gear
... expedition tents, gas burning stoves, excellent
food, warm, weatherproof clothing and satellite
communication! In arctic conditions, expect to
be windbound for a couple of days. We will spend
these off days exploring on foot. This trip is
designed for keen sea kayakers with a taste for
the unexpected in the high arctic.
