THE
NORTH CHANNEL - Whitefish to Killarney --
The North Channel winds between Manitoulin Island
and the north shore of Lake Huron. The route is
often sheltered by islands but there are open crossings
between large islands and sections of wide open
shoreline. Rounded, precambrian granite outcroppings
dominate the landscape with wind-twisted and gnarled
pines clinging to scarce pockets of soil. It's
a harsh and fragile environment - and one of the
most ruggedly beautiful places to kayak in Ontario.

Paddle the North Channel from Whitefish Falls to the charming fishing village of Killarney. The trip starts in the sheltered channels of Iroquois Bay before reaching the open waters of McGregor Bay with its beautiful views of the Blue Ridge of the La Cloche Mountains. Explore spectacular Bay Finn, a 15 km fjord leading to ‘The Pool’ - perhaps the most scenic anchorage in the Great Lakes. The trip finishes with some exposed paddling to the village of Killarney. This is an excellent trip for kayakers with some previous experience. With the addition of this section of the North Channel, Black Feather paddlers can now explore the entire shore from Key River on the west coast of Georgian Bay to the town of Spanish on the north shore.
