LAKE
SUPERIOR--
Lake Superior Provincial Park is a rugged shoreline
at the east end of Lake Superior. Paddlers will
find sweeping beaches, towering cliffs, eroded
dykes, granite islands, thrusting headlands, rolling
swells, crashing waves and long lingering sunsets.
Faults wrenched apart by ancient earthquakes shaped
this magnificent scenery that inspired the Group
of Seven. If you’re comfortable in your kayak
and even look forward to waves you are ready for
the eastern shore of this great freshwater sea.
From
Old Woman Bay we’ll follow the wild
shore with a week’s worth of food and supplies
in our kayaks. Much of the route is open to the
prevailing west winds. Sometimes we are faced with
open crossings, shores with no landings and exposed
headlands. We may only find comfortable paddling
conditions on two out of three days. We can enjoy
the off days hiking, beach combing, fishing, and
lolling by the campfire. At night we’ll pitch
our tents in protected coves and watch the sunset
offshore to the west. Along the way we’ll
find small waterfalls tumbling into the lake, search
for sunken ships, discover ancient native sites,
explore the coves and out-islands and gaze at the
Pictographs.
This trip is a great sea kayak getaway for the
intermediate or experienced paddler.
