Newfoundland's Southwest Coast - The rugged shores of Newfoundland
have changed little since the first Europeans arrived over five hundred years ago.
It juts into the Atlantic off the northeastern tip of North America, where a distinctive geology, biology and cultural history have
molded a unique people, with a strong tie to the sea.
This is a land of contrasts, of the humorous and annoying, the harsh and fulfilling,
the tragic and promise. Descriptive communities with labels like Heart’s Content, Dildo, Come by Chance, Blow me Down and Witless Bay,
hide along its erratic coastline. It is a welcome breath of fresh air, both figuratively and literally.
During our sea kayaking journey we discover deep fjords with abrupt,
barren walls that alternate with the coastal islands to provide a captivating land/seascape.
The rugged interior is a mixture of muskeg, glacial ponds and granite outcrops offering splendid hiking opportunities
where we will encounter carnivorous plants and the woodland caribou. In the isolated out ports, which cling tenaciously
to the exposed bedrock, we glimpse a threatened way of life as fishermen struggle to maintain their livelihood on a declining resource.
This is a special expedition along a ruggedly beautiful coastline.
