DEVON ISLAND--
Discover herds of wild Musk Oxen on a remote, high
Arctic island. Devon Island is a wilderness of
ice clad plateaus, granite peaks and austere hillsides.
Our
Devon Hike will arrive at the Truelove Lowlands
by Twin Otter aircraft from Resolute Bay. Here
is a unique arctic oasis - areas where plant
and animal life abound.
Released
from the continental ice cap approximately 10,000
years ago the land has risen significantly, leaving
raised beaches, lakes and ponds which have become
prime breeding habitat for arctic birds.
We
will explore this lush lowland area looking for
archaeological remains and herds of muskox. Then,
we will head inland, following the Truelove River.
As we climb, the terrain will become more austere
and vegetation will dwindle. We will have spectacular
views over Jones Sound and towards the Devon Ice
cap. We will head back by way of the Svedrup Glacier
and along the shoreline past Capes Hardy and Sparbo,
with additional opportunities to see archaeological
remains.
This
is a true Arctic wilderness, steeped in the lore
of ancient cultures and brave explorers - an excellent
expedition for the seasoned arctic adventurer.
