AXEL HEIBERG BASECAMP
 New
for 2011 - When explorer Otto Svendrup first spotted
Axel Heiberg island in 1899 its jagged peaks and
wild mountains transfixed him.
In
the century since Svendrup's discovery, few people
have visited the island, and it remains remote
and alluring.
The
west coast is storm tossed and ragged so we’ll
make our base camp on the gentler east side, sheilded
by the high mountains and the ice caps of the interior.
From here we’ll make
exploratory hikes, discovering the secrets held
by this high arctic landscape.
