UPPER
STIKINE RIVER --
The Stikine is a seldom travelled wild river in the far north corner of British
Columbia. From its source at Tuaton Lake it drops nearly 2000
meters to the Pacific. The headwater is in high alpine country;
meadows dotted with wildflowers, sparse aspen and conifers.
From a series of small lakes the Stikine builds to wild river
of swifts, rapids and canyons. Sightings of moose and caribou
are common along the river’s edge, and on our hikes inland
we may see mountain goats, Dall’s sheep and grizzly bear.
The river cuts through the Cassiar Mountains, Spatsizi Plateau
and Stikine Mountains. There are opportunities to hike from
our campsites to ridges and peaks. We will travel the most
pristine and wild section from the source to the Grand Canyon.
This section is characterized by canyons, rocky rapids, standing
waves and ledges. There will be some sections that will have
to be portaged. There will also be relaxing, peaceful stretches
of swifts and slow-moving water, which will allow us to bask
in the spendid mountain scenery. This is an ‘Exploratory’ trip
which means you will be the first group of Black Feather particpants
to paddle the river. Also, being part of an exploratory trip
means you must have a cheerful willingness to face the unknown,
challenges, trials and adventures we will find. You must be
willing to fully support the guides, the group and each other.
This unique adventure will very much be a team endeavour. Exploratory
expeditions are often the trip of a lifetime and a place where
new lifetime friendships are forged.
