CHULUUT
RIVER, MONGOLIA (SOAR) --
Paddle a thrilling whitewater river that few westerners
have even heard of, much less seen. This 15 day
trip is chock full of adventures, unusual experiences
and unexpected scenes. The river is a 7 day descent
through canyons and Class II and III rapids in
SOAR inflatable canoes. The current is so swift
through the Hangai Mountains that we easily average
30 km per day. The trip from the capital, Ulaanbaatar,
to our put in is an adventure itself. As we cross
Mongolia by truck to the river we’ll sleep
in a ‘Gers’ - the traditional felt
tent of the nomads, visit a Buddhist monastery,
see traditional dancers, hear the strange ‘throat
singers’, meet local nomads, and see the
site of Gengis Khan’s ancient capital. Our
destination is Arkhangai province known as the “Switzerland
of Mongolia”. Unlike the desert and steppes
to the south, this area is forested mountains.
Our river flows north, ultimately emptying into
Lake Bakail in neighbouring Siberia. If you have
good basic whitewater skills then the Chuluut River
could be the most unique canoe trip of your life.
