Nahanni Combo new for 2008
If you
like whitewater canoeing and hiking, this is the ultimate
Nahanni trip for you. The trip starts at the Mooseponds
- the headwaters of the South Nahanni River near the
Yukon border. After a warm up on the ponds we'll enter
the famous Rockgardens - an almost non-stop 90 km rapid
- possibly the finest stretch of whitewater in the world
for loaded tripping canoes. After descending 2000' in
4 days through countless grade 1-3+ rapids we'll catch
our breath on a relaxing section of lazy current. As
the river enters the Ragged Range we cache our canoes
and extra gear at the mouth of Britnell Creek. Then
its off on a 5 day hike into the mountains to beautiful
Glacier Lake and the Cirque of the Unclimbables - 2000'
of soaring granite cliffs. On our return to the river
it is a short paddle downstream to the border of the
National Park. Here park wardens will lead us on a day
hike to the Tufa Mounds - unusual hills still being
formed by highly mineralized springs.
The 2 week paddle through the canyons of the National Park is a fun mix of spectacular scenery, exciting big wave rapids, the grandeur of Virginia Falls, 1000 meter canyons, interesting side hikes and opportunities for wildlife sightings. At last we'll emerge from the high mountains into the splits - miles of easy, braided, rocky rapids. We'll soak in a natural hotspring before reaching the lowlands where natives from the isolated Dene community of Nahanni Butte pick us up by boat and speed us to Blackstone Landing for our final night. If you have the skills and the time to do it all - this is the complete Nahanni experience.
